Desert
Investigate this growing biome and discover how landscape and living things exist in harmony. Learn about desertification and the impact of ranching and overdevelopment in areas close to deserts that makes the desert a rapidly expanding ecosystem. In this extreme environment plants and animals are highly adapted for survival, but the balance of life is easily disrupted. When they look at how cactus collection affects the biodiversity of the desert and leads to erosion of the fragile soil, kids will appreciate the need to treat the desert with care. By comparing the areas of various deserts over time, Deserts will illustrate the expanding boundaries of this biome and kids will vividly see how environmental change in the desert can threaten life outside the desert
Children's Literature Review—"With a layout that resembles a scrapbook, information is presented in small, visually appealing doses. First presenting a definition of biomes and the desert biome in particular, the author then moves on to discuss the landscape and climate of the desert, plant and animal adaptations to the biome and current environmental threats. A brief discussion on the future of the biome is offered along with a full-page Conservation Challenge with suggestions on how readers can help the environment."
